‘Sweet’ Music: Violet Grohl Readies Debut Album

Violet Grohl’s debut solo album has been christened Be Sweet to Me and will be released May 29 by Auroura Records/Republic. The latest preview track from it, “595,” is out today (March 11) accompanied with a video directed by Nikki Milan Houston. The song was inspired by a vintage t-shirt Grohl bought from Etsy that advertises a pay-by-the-minute phone sex line.

Imbued with the groove-rooted rock of Queens of the Stone Age and the revved-up attitude of Hole, Be Sweet to Me was produced by Justin Raisen, who has garnered raves for his work on Kim Gordon’s two most recent albums. It’s Grohl’s most high-profile step in a music career undoubtedly shaped by her Foo Fighters-fronting dad Dave, with whom she has performed and recorded on numerous occasions in recent years.

“Music, whether it’s making it or just loving it, is a key thing that connects my family,” says the 19-year-old Grohl, whose omnivorous taste ranges from Scandinavian black metal and ’70s acoustic folk to cult classic alternative acts like the Sundays. “Around the time I was 12, it clicked for me that I love watching other people make music, and maybe I could too. I had been writing poetry as well, and it kickstarted the drive to want to turn painful experiences into art.”

Grohl previously released album track “THUM” with a Houston-directed video and also paid tribute to the influence of late filmmaker David Lynch with the non-album single “What’s Heaven Without You.” That track, backed by “Swallowtail,” will be released on seven inch vinyl April 18 as part of Record Store Day.

For now, Grohl’s only live appearance in support of Be Sweet to Me is Sept. 12 at Atlanta’s Shaky Knees festival, but more performances are in the planning stages.
