Here’a a sentence we thought we’d never type: Weird Al Yankovic is headed to Broadway.
A new stage musical titled Dare To Be Stupid: The Weird Al Musical is officially in development, bringing Yankovic’s four decades of accordion-fueled parody hits to the theater world, with Alex Timbers attached to direct. The production will feature a book by Scott Brown and Anthony King, the duo behind Gutenberg! The Musical! and Beetlejuice, with Tony-winning production company Seaview producing.
More from Spin:
The show will pull from the 66-year-old Yankovic’s bottomless catalog of parody staples, including “White & Nerdy,” “Amish Paradise,” “Eat It,” “Smells Like Nirvana” and “Like a Surgeon,” though producers say the musical will feature an original story rather than simply functioning as a jukebox revue.
“Ever since I was a middle-aged man, I’ve always wanted to be a part of the New York theatre community,” Yankovic jokes. “Plus, the one thing people always say about Broadway is that it’s ‘severely lacking in Weird Al-based entertainment.’” Timbers, whose previous credits include Moulin Rouge! The Musical, called the project “unexpected, subversive, meta and hilarious,” adding that he first became a fan during the era of Yankovic’s 1985 album Dare To Be Stupid.
Producer Greg Nobile describes Dare To Be Stupid as “wildly original, deeply funny and powered by the unmistakable heart that has made Weird Al Yankovic a singular voice in American culture.” Additional casting, timeline and production details are expected to be announced soon.
The Broadway move marks the latest screen-to-stage evolution for Yankovic’s self-aware brand of comedy. His music was previously featured in the beloved 1989 cult film UHF, in which he starred as the hapless operator of a failing public-access TV station. More recently, his wildly exaggerated life story was reimagined in 2022’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, which cast Daniel Radcliffe as an aggressively fictionalized version of the musician.
Yankovic is touring through mid-October as part of the 2026 edition of his Bigger and Weirder outing, which last year hit some of the largest venues of his career, including New York’s Madison Square Garden.
