‘New Girl’ Creator Liz Meriwether Writing Britney Biopic

The film adaptation of Britney Spears’ bestselling memoir The Woman in Me has taken another step forward. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Liz Meriwether has signed on to write the screenplay for Universal’s highly anticipated biopic, joining director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt.

Meriwether is best known as the creator of New Girl and for writing and producing acclaimed television series including The Dropout and Dying for Sex. Her hiring marks the first major creative addition to the project since Chu came aboard to direct. No casting or release date has yet been announced.

As previously reported, Universal landed the rights to The Woman in Me in August 2024 following a competitive bidding war. The deal included rights to Spears’ music, with Chu directing and Platt producing. At the time, Chu wrote on social media that he was “excited to share with you all that we have been developing a movie about the incredible story of Britney Spears” and thanked the singer “for your trust.”

Published in October 2023, The Woman in Me became one of the fastest-selling celebrity memoirs ever, chronicling Spears’ rise to pop superstardom, the conservatorship that controlled much of her adult life and her eventual return to independence.

The film is poised to capitalize on the growing wave of music-related biopics crowned by Michael, which has become the top-grossing biographical film of all-time as it approaches $1 billion at the box office.
