Dahi Drafts Kendrick, Gambino For ‘Black Boy’

After years of helping shape some of the defining hip-hop and R&B records of the past decade, producer Dahi is stepping into the spotlight with his first solo album.

The Grammy-winning producer, formerly known as DJ Dahi, will release his debut album, Black Boy (Alternative), on Aug. 28 via ALTER Music. Alongside the announcement, Dahi has unveiled the new single “Running,” featuring longtime collaborator Childish Gambino, accompanied by a new visual.

Black Boy (Alternative) finds Dahi channeling the collaborative spirit that has defined his career while presenting his most personal work to date. The project features appearances from Kendrick Lamar, Vince Staples, Channel Tres, Fousheé, Ravyn Lenae, Baby Rose, Sumney, Amber Mark and others, reflecting both the creative relationships he’s built and his own artistic evolution.

At the heart of the album is Dahi’s exploration of identity through a musical lens that refuses easy categorization. Drawing equally from the hip-hop and R&B that surrounded him growing up and the alternative and rock music that captured his imagination, Black Boy (Alternative) aims to recast Black identity as self-defined. “‘Running’ pays homage to my heritage,” Dahi said of the new single. “Black is beautiful. Bringing all I love into one space.”

The producer born Dacoury Natche’s past credits include Lamar’s “Money Trees” and Drake’s “Worst Behavior,” while his work on Lamar’s DAMN. contributed to the first Pulitzer Prize awarded to a hip-hop album. Dahi also won a Grammy for co-writing and producing 21 Savage’s “a lot” and earned a Producer of the Year nomination in 2023.

The new LP follows the previously released singles “Rest of Your Life” and “Find Me,” featuring Moses Sumney and Mez.
