Build Art Make Change is turning music, comedy and spoken word into a collective act of resistance with Contra-ICE Vol. 1: ICE OUT, a benefit compilation arriving Oct. 2 via SoundsGood Records. Curated by BAMC founder Dali Colorado, the album brings together more than 30 artists — including Ozomatli, Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna, Beastoe Boys’ Ad-Rock, Tom Morello, Fred Armisen, Fishbone, Money Mark, Love and Rockets’ David J and Jello Biafra — for a collection built around immigrant rights and opposition to inhumane immigration enforcement.
The compilation’s first taste is a decidedly unexpected one: a cover of DJ Snake and Justin Bieber’s “Let Me Love You” performed by Hanna with Ad-Rock, Money Mark, Fredo Ortiz and Frank Figueroa, and produced by longtime Beastie Boys collaborator Mario Caldato Jr. For Hanna, the project offered a chance to combine music with grassroots organizing. “It’s not often you get to play music with your favorite people while working with a grassroots organization like Contra-ICE,” she says, describing BAMC as passionately fighting “fascism and white supremacy.”
More from Spin:
Colorado sees the album as something larger than a collection of protest songs. “Contra-ICE is not only an album. It is not only a collective,” she says. “It is a cultural infrastructure built to support frontline organizations, amplify immigrant voices, and mobilize creatives.” Approaching the project as a DJ and curator, Colorado designed the sequencing as a journey through “grief, anger, resilience, hope and ultimately, action.”
The compilation will also put those proceeds directly to work, with funds supporting frontline organizations including the National Day Laborer Organizing Network and Unión del Barrio, which work to defend labor rights and protect community-built wealth.
Artistic director and acclaimed cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz describes the project in similarly broad cultural terms. “Through art, humor, and creativity, we are using free expression to remind people what is at stake and to show how culture itself can be a form of resistance,” he says.
Contra-ICE Vol. 1: ICE OUT will be released digitally and on CD, alongside a limited vinyl edition featuring a selection of tracks and a premium vinyl package with a print signed by Alcaraz and other compilation artists. BAMC will mark the release with a day of performances by artists and DJs featured on the record Oct. 3 at La Cita in Los Angeles.
