Princess Goes is stretching its boundaries on 3, the New York trio’s third full-length album, due Oct. 30. The band — actor Michael C. Hall, Matt Katz-Bohen and Peter Yanowitz — announced the record alongside “French Kiss,” a six-and-a-half-minute dance-floor slow-burn that eventually opens into a cinematic finale.

The new album follows 2023’s Come of Age and 2021’s Thanks for Coming, continuing a strange, stylish musical partnership that began when the three met performing in Hedwig & the Angry Inch on Broadway. What started as three friends making music together after the show closed has grown into a band with two prior albums, two EPs and more than 100 live performances worldwide, while retaining a decidedly under-the-radar quality.

For Hall, that low-key trajectory has been part of the appeal. “I think the three of us recognize the unique alchemy that exists among us,” he tells SPIN. “We keep showing up because we’re compelled by that and want to honor it.”

That alchemy appears to be pushing outward on 3. “We’ve never approached creating a record with some sort of mission statement in mind,” Hall says. “We follow things where they lead.” This time, he adds, “there is something more wide open and expansive about the songs,” a quality the band embraced throughout the sessions.

The shift was also aided by producer Brandon Bost, marking a departure from the group’s previous practice of self-producing in its own studio. Hall says Bost’s involvement “upended the way we worked, and the overall sonics of the record.”

The evolution is particularly apparent in “French Kiss,” which Hall says developed gradually, both musically and lyrically, over multiple iterations. That contrasts with “Stranger,” the album’s earlier single, which he describes as “pretty fully formed from the start.”

There are no definitive live plans surrounding the album yet, Hall says.
