Andrew W.K. Trades ‘Party Hard’ For… Jazz-Noir

The party has moved somewhere considerably stranger. Five years after God Is Partying and 25 after his head-banging debut, Andrew W.K. has returned with Temptation To Exist, an instrumental jazz-noir album that finds the artist once known as the King of Partying stepping away from his trademark maximalist hard rock and into a shadowier, more cinematic musical world.

It’s an unlikely turn for an artist whose name has been synonymous with celebration for more than two decades. Andrew W.K.’s 2001 debut, I Get Wet, and its immortal rallying cry “Party Hard” transformed partying from a pastime into an ecstatic argument for intensity, perseverance and squeezing every possible drop of life from the moment.

Temptation To Exist approaches that same existential impulse from the other side of the door. Across a sprawling instrumental palette of piano, brass, woodwinds, cello, percussion, vibraphone, organ and synthesizers, Andrew W.K. creates music that feels exploratory, unpredictable and occasionally disorienting.

He produced and mixed the album himself, playing piano, guitar, bass, drums, percussion, organ, celeste, vibraphone, keyboards and synthesizers, among other instruments. He is joined by Nick Lane on trombone and bass trombone, Gabe Noel on cello and bass harmonica and Ryan Tharayil on alto saxophone, flute and clarinet. Tharayil also served as assistant engineer.

“Nobody will ever know what he went through to land here, his most exquisite musical era yet,” W.K.’s wife, actress Kat Dennings, wrote on Instagram. “I’ve never seen anyone who can sit down at a piano and literally play any song entirely from memory that he’s never tried playing before. He’s a composing genius, and this is just the beginning. He would never think that about himself, but I’m married to him, so I can say it dammit!”

The album was recorded and mixed at Valentine Studios and Lobrutto Visuals/R.C.U. Audio West, both in Los Angeles. Steev Mike serves as executive producer, with Andy Petr engineering and assisting with mixing alongside Tharayil on assistant engineering duties. Legendary mastering engineer Howie Weinberg, who has worked on numerous Andrew W.K. albums, handled the mastering. Creative direction came from Frank Vierti and Phem C. Palmer, with cover photography by Herb Maximo.
