Chicago’s biggest weekend of music kicked off in rousing fashion on Thursday, July 30, when SPIN, GuestList and Punch Bowl Social transformed the second floor of the latter for a packed birthday bash that doubled as a celebration of the city’s house music legacy.
The West Loop venue’s upstairs space was completely reimagined for the event as an immersive dance floor. Punch Bowl Social welcomed more than 1,000 RSVPs and attracted a long line of eager guests before the doors even opened.
More from Spin:

Once the music got underway, the room was filled wall-to-wall with dancers reveling to three generations of Chicago house. The evening was capped off with an epic set by headliner Chez Damier, one of the Windy City’s most influential musical figures.
Damier helped define the global house music movement with iconic floor-fillers like “Can U Feel It?” and “I Never Knew Love.” His impact on dance music stretches back to the earliest days of Chicago’s underground scene.
His electric performance reminded everyone in the audience why his records remain essential listening decades after they were first released. The high point of his set came when he asked guests to put their phones away so the crowd could simply experience the music together. Glowing screens were tucked away and replaced by raised hands and nonstop movement as the packed dance floor embraced a rare opportunity to be fully present in the moment.
Rising DJ jayah opened the evening with a deep, atmospheric set that eased the crowd into the night. From there, famed New York DJ Jovonn — beloved for ‘90s club classics like “Back in the Dark” and “Pianos of Gold “ — took command of the room. The deep, heavy grooves that permeate his unmistakable style elevated the vibe as the audience fed off the energy.

Beyond the DJ booth, music, art, and community intersected in ways that reflected Chicago’s creative spirit. Guests were welcomed by a vibrant vendor village featuring live screen-printing from Spudnik Press, which produced limited-edition tote bags showcasing artwork by Chicago artist Emma Erickson.
Meanwhile flash tattoos by Tattoo Art Collective 43, custom grills by Jem Junkies, and interactive experiences added to the festival-like atmosphere. Activations and support from partners including Liquid Death, Red Bull, RumHaven, Espolòn Tequila, Montucky Cold Snacks, and Mirth kept guests engaged throughout the evening.
Punch Bowl Social also crafted a special signature cocktail for the occasion appropriately named SPIN Juice, giving guests another way to toast both the venue’s birthday and Chicago’s rich music history. And local institution The Wiener’s Circle served complimentary hot dogs to the first 50 attendees.
Behind the scenes, the venue’s bowling alley put strikes and spares on hold for the night. It was transformed into an artist green room and interview space where SPIN conducted exclusive conversations with performers while capturing photography, social content, and behind-the-scenes footage for future editorial and video coverage.
Anna Chang — who was just named Peet’s Chief Playlist Officer — was one such participant. Fresh off her first day at Lollapalooza, the former Morning Becomes Eclectic producer spoke on camera about what makes a great playlist: “You’ve got your indie, you’ve got your electronic, a little bit of soul, R&B. Just riding the wave of emotion [and] feeling, kind of taking you on a journey, and making you feel good at the end of the day.”

Speaking of Lollapalooza, as the night wound down, Punch Bowl Social surprised one particularly deserving guest with free passes to the massive Grant Park event. The lucky winner occupied the dance floor from the very first record until the final track, embodying the communal spirit that has always defined house music culture.
More than a concert or club night, Punch Bowl Social’s Birthday Bash demonstrated why Chicago remains the spiritual home of house music. By pairing legendary artists with emerging talent, celebrating local visual artists alongside musicians, and creating space for fans to connect through music, SPIN, Punch Bowl Social and GuestList delivered an unforgettable evening.
It personified what house music has always been about: community, connection, and the simple joy of losing yourself on a dance floor. What a memorable night!
