Dinosaur Jr. Celebrating New LP With Four NYC Shows

Dinosaur Jr. is turning the release of There Near into a three-night New York takeover, with Fender and Show Brain announcing four intimate shows across the city in celebration of the band’s first album in five years.

Dubbed The One. For New York., the series runs Aug. 27-29, with Dinosaur Jr. headlining every performance amid a rotating cast of friends that includes Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog, Steve Gunn, Thurston Moore Group, They Are Gutting a Body of Water, Mike Kinsella of American Football and Snail Mail performing solo.

There Near arrives Aug. 28 via Jagjaguwar. For it, vocalist/guitarist J Mascis also dug out a 1970s Mesa Boogie MK 1 amp — the same model used on the band’s earliest material—in an effort to reconnect with Dinosaur Jr.’s original sonic identity.

The Fender series takes that back-to-the-roots spirit into some decidedly New York spaces. It opens Aug. 27 at Lucinda’s with Dinosaur Jr. and Ribot’s Ceramic Dog, followed by an Aug. 28 appearance at Skinny Dennis with Gunn. Saturday brings a daytime show at Maria Hernandez Park in Bushwick with Mooreand They Are Gutting a Body of Water, followed that evening by a Baby’s All Right bill with Kinsella and Snail Mail.

Events at Lucinda’s, Skinny Dennis and Maria Hernandez Park are free with RSVP and first-come, first-served entry, while limited tickets are available for the Baby’s All Right show. Mascis and Fender previously reamed to create a signature Jazzmaster guitar model, with pickups, hardware and finish all specified by the artist himself.

Meanwhile, Dinosaur Jr.’s fall headlining tour in support of There Near kicks off Oct. 9 in Las Vegas.
