Finn Wolfhard Boards Neon True Crime Drama

Musician/Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard has lined up his next major film role, signing on to star in director Matt Johnson’s untitled true-crime drama based on a bizarre real-life cocaine smuggling operation tied to Vice Canada. No release date has been announced.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Neon has acquired domestic rights to the project following the U.S. release of Johnson’s Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie. The upcoming film centers on the true story of a Vice Canada editor who allegedly recruited drug mules for an international cocaine trafficking scheme, at times operating directly out of the company’s offices. Wolfhard will play the investigative journalist who helped uncover the story.

The project continues a busy stretch for Wolfhard, who late last year wrapped his multi-year run Stranger Things and has steadily expanded his work across film, directing and music. As previously reported, he’s attached to potentially star in and/or direct a forthcoming film adaptation of the Bob Mehr-penned Replacements biography Trouble Boys.

A musician since childhood, Wolfhard’s most recent album, Happy Birthday, was released in June 2025 by AWAL. Its follow-up, Fire From the Hip, is due July 10. Earlier this year, he collaborated with Neon on his directorial debut, Hell of a Summer.

Meanwhile, Johnson has built a reputation for blending documentary-style realism with offbeat historical and media stories. His breakout projects include The Dirties, Operation Avalanche and the widely acclaimed BlackBerry. He is next set to direct Tony, an Anthony Bourdain biopic starring Dominic Sessa for A24.
