Fresh off debuting two new songs on Saturday Night Live last weekend, Jack White has been added as a surprise performer at the Coachella festival on Saturday (April 11). The artist will return to Empire Polo Club in Indio, Ca., for the first time since 2015 as part of a 45-minute set in the Mojave Tent at 3 p.m.
White was also a guest on last night’s episode of CBS’ The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, during which he bemoaned the omnipresence of AI in modern society. “It seems like as our species, it’s this thing we created that nobody likes, but we’re just not going to do anything about it? It’s just going to ruin the universe, OK!,” he said.
More from Spin:
White paid further tribute to his mother, Teresa Gillis, who died in March at the age of 95. “She was just a saint. She was incredibly funny without realizing how funny she was,” he said before telling a story about her confusing his comment about doing donuts with his car in an icy church parking lot with an honest question about whether there would be refreshments after mass service.
On Saturday, the former White Stripes frontman premiered the rollicking “G.O.D. and the Broken Ribs” and “Derecho Demonico” a day after releasing the tracks on streaming platforms. He also appeared in skits with host Jack Black, including a faux country song about being unable to remember profound words of wisdom.
Whilte will pend chunks of the spring and summer on tour internationally, beginning May 30 in Latvia and concluding Aug. 23 in Istanbul. His only stateside show at the moment will be at the Borderland festival in East Aurora, N.Y., the weekend of Sept. 18.
