Jennifer Finch’s Posthumous Memoir Set For 2027

Jennifer Finch’s story is getting one final, deeply personal chapter. Da Capo will publish Shooting Up and Making Out: A Memoir of My Life in L.A. and L7, the memoir the L7 bassist completed with co-writer Jeff Alulis before her cancer-related death on July 18 at the age of 59.

The 272-page book arrives Jan. 19, 2027, and promises an unvarnished account of the life of the musician, photographer, activist and survivor who made a deep impact on the Los Angeles punk and alternative underground.

Finch was just 12 when she entered the local hardcore scene and 14 when she first began using heroin. At 19, she formed a band with Courtney Love and Kat Bjelland; in her early twenties, she joined L7 as the band was swept into the grunge and alternative explosion. Along the way came stages shared with Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers, a relationship with Dave Grohl, addiction, recovery and the deaths of close friends.

The memoir traces that trajectory without sanding down its rough edges, following Finch as she rebuilt her life through sobriety, photography and advocacy. She was also a co-founder of an influential pro-choice advocacy group and remained a creative force across mediums and disciplines.

“Jennifer’s memoir was the last major project she completed before she passed away,” Alulis said. He and Finch worked on the book for two years, with Alulis noting that they made sure she was satisfied with every word. “I’m heartbroken that she won’t get to see it published, but I’m thrilled to share her life and legacy with the world.”

Da Capo Executive Editor Ben Schafer described it as a story in which she “poured her soul into every word. Like her, it is as real as it gets, suffused with hard-earned insight into the human condition, and shot through with tender compassion.”
