Kurt Vile will return next month with a new album, Philadelphia’s been good to me, which doubles as a love letter to the city that shaped him. Due May 29 on Verve Records, it’s led by first single “Chance To Bleed,” which Vile helpfully describes as “hillbilly techno.”

The track features a small army of underground lifers, including Optic Sink’s Natalie Hoffman, Slint’s Ethan Buckler and Reigning Sound’s Greg Cartwright, the latter trading guitar leads with Vile in a stereo split that’s as geeky as it is glorious.

More from Spin:

The video doubles down on the hometown mythology. Shot inside Philly dive Kung Fu Necktie, it conjures a packed house party with cameos from cult online comic Jim E Brown and rap pioneer Schoolly D, who shows up in full fur-coated legend mode.

Vile calls Philadelphia his “bringing it all back home” record but adds that he’s “treating it like my last record. I put everything into it. It’s my best vocal record. It’s my best electric guitar record. It’s my most organic record, made in the comfort of my own zone.” Written and recorded between 2023 and early 2026, much of it took shape in his Mt. Airy basement studio, a gear-cluttered sanctuary he’s dubbed OKV Central. From there, the songs stretch outward via sessions in Memphis, Athens and Los Angeles.

The former War on Drugs member will support the album with an extensive world tour, including a previously announced July 25 blowout in his hometown as part of the Make the World Better Foundation concert series. Dates begin June 16 in Toronto and run through Nov. 24 in Baltimore.
