More Neil Young Covers On The Way As Tribute Series Expands

The all-star celebration of Neil Young’s songbook is growing. After the release of Heart of Gold: The Songs of Neil Young, Vol. 1 last year, Cinema Music Group and Killphonic Records have announced two more installments in the benefit series: Vol. 2 – Out of the Blue and Vol. 3 – Into the Black, both arriving Nov. 6.

As previously reported, proceeds from the project benefit the Bridge School, the nonprofit founded by Neil and and his late wife Pegi Young to support individuals with severe speech and physical impairments.Like its predecessor, the new collection assembles an eclectic roster of artists interpreting Young’s catalog. Among the contributors are My Morning Jacket, Lucinda Williams, Heart’s Ann Wilson, Peter Frampton, Los Lobos, Modest Mouse featuring Califone, Ben Gibbard, Cold War Kids, Kurt Vile and the Violators, MJ Lenderman and LP.

The announcement arrives alongside two preview tracks. King Princess offers a stripped-down take on the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young classic “Helpless,” while Draco Rosa reimagines “After the Gold Rush.”

“It felt kismet that they asked me to do ‘Helpless,’” King Princess said. “It’s my mom and my favorite Neil Young song; I can hear her singing it in the car on our way upstate.” She added that she and producer Brad Oberhofer recorded the song in a single take at her father’s studio, intentionally keeping it intimate. “The only thing we changed was just making it longer. My only complaint about the original is that it’s too short. I want more.”

Rosa called participating in the project “a true honor,” adding, “Bridge School holds significance. Neil Young’s melodies resonate deeply. ‘After the Gold Rush’ is a pivotal song in my journey, reflecting the hope of finding a new home in the sun.”

The Bridge School is marking its 40th anniversary this year, and executive director Gabriela Berlanga said the albums are “a meaningful reminder of the incredible community that has supported our mission for so many years.” She added that every purchase helps provide communication, education and support for individuals with communication and physical disabilities.

The first Heart of Gold collection, released in April 2025, featured performances by Eddie Vedder, the Lumineers, Courtney Barnett, Sharon Van Etten, Mumford & Sons, Brandi Carlile and the Doobie Brothers with Allison Russell, among others.
