Peter Frampton’s first album of new rock material since 2010 will feature guest turns from Tom Morello, H.E.R., Graham Nash, Sheryl Crow, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench and saxophonist Bill Evans. Carry the Light was produced and co-written with Frampton’s son Julian and will be released May 15 on UMe.

The lead track is “Buried Treasures,” which the 75-year-old Frampton named after the long-running all-Petty station on SiriusXM Radio. The lyrics consist entirely of Petty song titles, while Tench’s keys add an extra touch of authenticity.

More from Spin:

Elsewhere, Crow duets with Frampton on “Breaking the Mold,” Morello appears on the protest song “Lions at the Gate,” Nash adds harmonies to “I’m Sorry Elle” and H.E.R. plays guitar on the instrumental “Islamorada.” “This may be the best album Peter’s ever made,” says engineer/co-producer Chuck Ainlay. “The songs are just so poignant, and his voice has matured in a way that really delivers what he’s trying to get across.”

In 2019, Frampton was diagnosed with inclusion body myositis, which causes his muscles to weaken. He’s managed to continue playing live in the year since, including a 30-plus date North American run last year. For now, he has no shows on his upcoming calendar.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of his beloved Frampton Comes Alive! album, which has been reissued in a Vinylphyle edition.
