Standing On The Corner Rework Surprise LP

Standing on the Corner’s latest album is getting a second life — albeit in typically elusive fashion. After the Brooklyn collective quietly uploaded an album titled Standing on the Corner: II to YouTube last month, the group has announced SOTC (“II”), an officially released version arriving Sept. 11 via XL Recordings.

While the label has declined to explain exactly how the two records differ, the newly announced edition arrives with an updated guest roster, a new single titled “Mr. Postman, wait!,” B-side “Splitting Moonlight” and what appears to be a reshaped version of the project.

The surprise YouTube release featured appearances from Gang Starr’s Big Shug, Danny Brown, Styles P and legendary poet Sonia Sanchez, but the official album credits tell a somewhat different story. Big Shug is absent from the announced lineup, while Solange joins a cast that also includes Ladybug Mecca, Claudette Ortiz, Bubba Dupree and the Warlockettes.

Recorded by bandleader Gio Escobar alongside core collaborators Jack “Wacko” Nolan, Buz “Man-man” Donald and Clérida “Ca$h Clay” Eltimé, SOTC (“II”) is described as a 15-track album that blurs the boundaries between fried psychedelia, rock ‘n’ roll, no-wave rap, R&B and post-hardcore. According to the group, the record reflects “a national moment of searching for meaning/nothing/sounds/silence/creation/or destruction, through an overarching instability, alienation, decline and refusal.”

That restless, shape-shifting approach has defined Standing on the Corner since its founding in Brooklyn in 2015. Led by Escobar, the collective has consistently treated music as just one part of a broader artistic practice encompassing film, installation, performance and community work, often releasing projects unexpectedly or in deliberately fleeting forms.
