Sting Narrating Doc On ‘Godfather’ Composer Nino Rota

Sting is set to narrate a new documentary portrait of Nino Rota, the Italian composer whose music traversed the worlds of cinema and the concert hall, from Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and 8½ to Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather. Nino – Un Film Su Nino Rota, directed by Walter Fasano, will receive a special screening at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

Rather than presenting a conventional cradle-to-grave biography, the film takes a “free and associative” approach to Rota’s life, exploring the personal, artistic and spiritual relationships that shaped an artist who devoted himself entirely to music and the ideals it embodied. Photographs and archival materials are woven together with interviews to illuminate a composer whose work continues to resonate well beyond the films for which he became famous.

Rota was a precocious musical talent who studied with Ildebrando Pizzetti, Alfredo Casella and Rosario Scalero before turning his attention to cinema. He ultimately composed around 150 film scores, collaborating with Luchino Visconti on The Leopard, Franco Zeffirelli on Romeo and Juliet and, most famously, Fellini on a remarkable run that included The White Sheik, La Strada, Nights of Cabiria, La Dolce Vita, 8½, Amarcord and Orchestra Rehearsal.

His greatest international breakthrough came with The Godfather, whose instantly recognizable themes helped establish Rota as one of the defining film composers of his era. His score for The Godfather Part II earned him the Academy Award for Best Original Score, further cementing a reputation that had sometimes been complicated by his relationship with music critics during his lifetime.

The film is also interested in the man behind those unmistakable melodies. Its director describes Rota as “warm, reserved and famously absent-minded,” while also portraying him as profound, uncompromising and deeply self-aware. For Fasano, the extraordinary nature of Rota’s music means that the documentary’s job is less to explain it than to create the space for it to be heard and felt.
