Tori Amos Pens A Second ‘Fairytale’

Tori Amos is returning to the Emerald Forest. The musician and New York Times bestselling author has announced her second children’s book, A Sorta Fairytale, due April 6, 2027, from Penguin Workshop. It’s a prequel to her 2025 debut children’s book Tori and the Muses and further explores the enchanted world of Rose Dover and its woodland inhabitants, while offering newcomers an entry point into the story.

As Amos told SPIN in a 2025 interview about Tori and the Muses, the project grew out of her desire to create something that could introduce young readers to the idea of following their own creative instincts.

A Sorta Fairytale takes that idea deeper into Amos’ fictional universe. Young Tori finds her hometown of Rose Dover under the spell of Mr. Bad Man and calls upon her animal friends in the Emerald Forest — and, naturally, the Muses — to help restore the town’s spark. Their solution involves building a very special pink piano, with music ultimately providing the key to breaking the spell.

“After I finished Tori and the Muses, I knew there were still stories calling to me, especially from the creatures who helped shape that world,” Amos says. “Stepping deeper into Rose Dover and into the Emerald Forest, I discovered all the stories it held.”

The new book reunites Amos with illustrator Demelsa Haughton, whose otherworldly artwork helped establish the visual language of Tori and the Muses. “Working with Demelsa Haughton again [and] watching her bring this world to life through her exquisite illustrations, was endlessly inspiring,” Amos says. “And of course, every journey into an enchanted land needs a good faerie, so having Francesco Sedita on my shoulder made the whole adventure that much more fun.”

Sedita, president and publisher of Penguin Workshop, says returning to the world of Tori and the Muses has been “more fun than I can describe,” adding that watching Amos create the environment and its magic “is nothing short of wonderful.”

Alongside Tori and the Muses, Amos’ books include 2020’s Resistance: A Songwriter’s Story of Hope, Change and Courage and 2005’s Piece by Piece. She has released 18 studio albums, most recently this year’s In Times of Dragons.
