Turnstile vocalist Brandon Yates, Rainer Maria frontwoman Caithlin De Marrais and Wisp’s Natalie R. Lu make guest appearances on American Football’s highly anticipated LP4, which will be released May 1 on Polyvinyl Records. The project is available for pre-order in a variety of physical formats, including vinyl, CD and cassette.

Yates sings on “No Feeling”; his contribution was recorded the day after the band casually asked if he’d like to stop by producer Sonny DiPerri’s L.A. studio. “There’s a shimmery, sort of silver quality to his voice when he sings high and nails those long pitches,” group member Nate Kinsella says in a new American Football bio on Polyvinyl’s web site. “It’s so beyond what I expected on that song.”

More from Spin:

De Marrais lends her voice to “Blood on My Blood,” nodding to a decades-long friendship with American Football’s members (vocalist Mike Kinsella used to serve as Rainer Maria’s merch salesperson on early tours). Elsewhere, Wisp’s Lu is said to “provide the perfect ethereal contrast on the almost poppy” song “Wake Her Up.”

“The charm of the first record is that it could have only been made by kids,” guitarist Steve Holmes says. “This record could only have been made by adults. There’s a swagger that comes with the confidence of having done this for a long time, and there’s gravitas to Mike’s lyrics. There’s still breakup and heartbreak in there, but it’s much more real.”

The first preview from LP4 is the eight-minute-plus “Bad Moons,” which was released late last month. The influential Midwestern band will support it with an extensive 2026 world tour, which begins May 15 in Denver and wraps up Aug. 16 in Minneapolis.

“From the instrumentation to the arrangements to Nate running into a microphone and apologizing and us leaving it on the album, I’m really proud of the decisions we made,” Mike Kinsella says in the bio. “We’ve gotten nothing but better at writing songs.  We worked together way better than we ever had before. This album is a leap of faith, musically, but I’m proud of us for being ambitious enough to try something different.”
