“As the world burns, I have decided to release this album. Thanks for listening.”
That’s how Vince Staples is introducing Cry Baby, his newly announced 10-track album arriving June 5 via Loma Vista Recordings. The project marks a new phase for Staples, who has spent his entire career in the Universal Music Group system with Def Jam and Motown.
More from Spin:
Following 2022’s inward-facing Ramona Park Broke My Heart and the even more stripped-down Dark Times two years later, Cry Baby pivots outward, taking aim at what Staples describes as the “endlessly repeating cycles of American tumult.”
The rollout began over the weekend with the rock-leaning lead single “Blackberry Marmalade.” Staples premiered its striking, violent video directly to fans via Discord and YouTube before pushing it wider, underscoring the DIY ethos behind this era.
Sonically, Cry Baby represents a departure as well. Staples built the album around live instrumentation, moving away from the minimal, sample-driven palette that has defined much of his recent work. The result, according to early details, is a more immediate and confrontational sound — one meant to mirror the tension and instability he’s writing about.
